The WAFA Selection Committee consists of experts in water, air and food sustainability. They are responsible for evaluating and certifying Award applications and selecting the WAFA finalists.
Margareta Barchan is a graduate of Harvard Business School and advanced studies in corporate social responsibility at the University of Geneva. She earned her MSc from HEC Paris in collaboration with Oxford University.
An affiliate professor in sustainability at Lorange Institute for Business Zurich and in leadership & management at Business School Lausanne, Margareta serves as a director on several corporate boards. Also an entrepreneur, Margareta has started several successful companies and foundations, always with a focus on the human side of change. She earned the “Business Woman of the Year” award in Sweden,1997.
Margareta specializes in helping organisations develop strategies for a sustainable future through balancing social, environmental and financial responsibilities. She is presently driving the “Brave Leaders Project”, with support from the Boston College Carroll School of Management. The project focusses on why some leaders are more prepared to stand up for their values and beliefs than others.
Adam is an expert on business and global sustainability challenges and finance. An Executive in Residence at the Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP), he is a Fellow of the Quebec Order of Chartered Professional Accountants (FCPA, FCA), an Associate Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). During his international business career (North America, Europe, North Africa) he gained a great deal of experience in strategy and business development, planning and risk management, corporate and government affairs.
He is an international speaker on the business and financial angles of global sustainability challenges and is involved with several philanthropic and social and charitable programs.
Formerly he was the Executive Director of the global environmental organization of Mikhail Gorbachev that addressed the challenges of security, economic development and the environment, and he led the Gorbachev Climate Change Task Force.
WAFA is honored to have Adam on the selection committee for several years.
Ashok Swain obtained his PhD at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University since 2005, he serves as director of the Uppsala Centre for Sustainable Development, Sweden.
Ashok has been a MacArthur Fellow at the University of Chicago and visiting fellow at: the UN Research Institute for Social Development (Switzerland); McGill University, University of British Columbia, University of Science (Malaysia), Witwatersrand University, University of Maryland, Stanford University, and Tufts University. He has consulted with OSCE, NATO, EU, IISS, the governments of Singapore and Sweden, as well as UN agencies.
He writes extensively on environmental security and international water-sharing issues.
Omar Hayat earned a first-class degree in Engineering and a Ph.D. in catalytic kinetics from Imperial College, London University. He continued there as a postdoctoral fellow. He has extensive knowledge on transport emissions, notably their effect on the environment and human health.
Dr. Hayat founded a technology company that developed the world’s first non-metallic combustion enhancer to reduce fossil fuel emissions. He also serves as a director of a biotechnology start-up specialising in treatment for pregnancy complications. The company offers the first diagnostic and therapeutic for preeclampsia. He recently stepped down as Trustee and Director of Scott Bader Commonwealth Limited – a global chemical company with a cooperative ownership structure.
A trustee of The Gandhi Foundation for the past 12 years, Dr. Hayat has responsibility for the prestigious Gandhi Foundation International Peace Award.
Patrick Worms has an extensive background in communications, international relations, branding, issues management, marketing, EU policy process, and teaching. For many years, he has worked globally to raise environmental awareness.
Patrick is vice-president of Agenda LLC; senior science policy advisor at World Agroforestry Centre, financed by the World Bank; and principal of Ecosolutions, a project management services company.
His work at the World Agroforestry Centre tackles the environmental, economic, and social implications of climate change. The Centre envisions “a rural transformation throughout the tropics as smallholder households increase their use of trees in agricultural landscapes to improve their food security, nutrition security, income, health, shelter, social cohesion, energy resources and environmental sustainability”.
